NE forum mooted for developing medicinal plants Health experts, scientists and researchers of eight Northeastern States are chalking out an action plan to formulate a common platform for all medicinal and aromatic plant growers, traders, and researchers in the region.The action plan was tabled at the end of the two day National workshop on conservation and commercialization of medicinal & aromatic plants in the North East with special reference to Manipur here on April 12.The objective of the workshop was to produce an action plan to facilitate sensitization of the roles and activities of the medicinal plants boards, said P Vaiphei, Health Secretary, Manipur Government. It may be mentioned here that at the initiative of the National Medicinal Plants Board, 32 State medicinal plants boards have been set up in the country. The basic motive of establishing the boards is to institute an agency to streamline the medicinal plants sector,to achieve high quality commercial productions, value added products, drawing up of policies, strategies for conservation, proper harvesting through financial assistance as medicinal plants are not only a resource of affordable health care, medicinal items but also a source of income. The North East region lying in the Indo-Burma bio-diversity hotspots ranks eighth amongst the 34 biodiversity hotspots of the world. Earlier in the day Manipur Chief Minister Okram Ibobi in presence of State Health Minister Gaikhangam inaugurated the National workshop here. Dr B N Saha, Scientist-in-charge, North East Institute of Science and Technology,Itanagar, Dr Y Kumar, Reader, NEHU, Dr B K Pandey, scientist, CRFRI, Jorhat, Dr Sudeep Tandon, scientist, CIMAP, Lucknow, Prof Joykumar Laishram, Central Agriculture University, Eroishemba, Prof N Rajmuhon of Manipur University and Dr H B Singh, scientist-in- charge of North East Institute of Science and Technology, Lamphelpat spoke in the technical session. The workshop concluded on Friday with a valedictory function with State Health secretary as chief guest. Meanwhile, a five-day cocoon mela was opened at Kangla hall in Imphal under the aegis of State Sericulture department
