NCP MLAs join Cong
The
only two NCP MLAs in the 60-member Arunachal Pradesh Assembly have defected
to the Congress raising the strength of the ruling party to 35.Nationalist
Congress Party MLAs, Nikh Kamin and Thangwang Wangham, had approached the
Congress expressing their desire to join the party and applied to him,
Assembly Speaker Setong Sena informed.
Central
funds for Meghalaya
The
Union Ministry of Rural Development has released the first instalment of
Central share for implementation of the Swarnjayanti Gram Swarojgar Yojana (SGSY)
during 2006-07 in Meghalaya. Accordingly, a sum of Rs 80,91,000 has been
sanctioned as grant-in-aid to the DRDA, West Garo Hills district. Likewise,
a sum of Rs 5,69,000 have been released as second installment of Central
share of funds under SGSY during 2006-07 to the DRDA, Ri Bhoi district. An
amount of Rs 66,51,000 have also been released to the Government of
Meghalaya towards second installment against the total approved cost of Rs
190.03 lakhs for computerisation project under the Rajiv Gandhi National
Drinking Water Mission under revised MIS guidelines during the year 2006-07.
Centre
approves Rs 900-cr highway for Sikkim
The
only road link for Sikkim, National Highway 31 A, is all set to be converted
into a two-lane highway with the Centre deciding on investing Rs 900 crores
in the next two years.The stretch between Sevoke and Gangtok, on the NH 31 A
covering about 90 km has been included under the special accelerated road
development programme (SARDP).The project is being executed by the National
Highways Authority of India (NHAI) for which tenders are to be floated
shortly. The project has been alloted under phase I of the SARDP, expected
to be concluded by 2009
Medical
student drowns in Loktak
A
medical student from Arunachal Pradesh studying in final year MBBS at
Regional Institute of Medical Sciences, Lamphelpat here was drowned in
Loktak Lake in Manipur’s Bishnupur district when he was boating with two
friends. A report reaching here said the Arunachalee student along with his
MBBS colleagues went for a picnic at Karang Island located in the middle of
the Lake. Local fishermen retrieved the body of the student identified as
one Chaosependra Haopak. The police later sent the body to RIMS morgue for
post mortem. Police said altogether 43 students of the MBBS final year had
gone for a picnic to Karang. One of the boats, in which the deceased along
with two of his colleagues were boating, suddenly capsized, police said. The
other two students swam to the shore but Haopak failed to emerge from water.

Dorjee
Khandu, who recently took over as the fifth Chief Minister of Arunachal
Pradesh, called on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh here today.Sources in the
Prime Minister’s Office described the meeting as a courtesy call.
Lapang
calls for people’s help in development
Meghalaya
Chief Minister D D Lapang has asked villagers to cooperate with the
government in its efforts to develop the rural areas with development
projects.Inaugurating a Rs.1.20 lakh community hall constructed under the
Centrally-sponsored Sampoorna Gram Samridhi Yojana scheme at Raij Marngar in
Ri Bhoi district yesterday, Lapang said the State Government was committed
to ensure development in rural areas.
