EC to cancel 65,000 EPIC cards

In its effort to prepare an error-free voter list, the Election Commission has decided to cancel 65,000 electronic photo identity cards (EPIC) in Tripura, where Assembly polls are due in March next year.“The State Election department will cancel the photo identity cards of those who have got two identity cards issued from two different places of the State, which is illegal,” Tripura chief electoral officer G S G Ayengar said. The discrepancy was detected by the use of “e-clean software” sent by the Election Commission.

The department has prepared a list of such voters and have sent it to booth level officers for cancelling one i-card, he said and appealed to the voters to voluntarily get one of their i-cards cancelled.“The final voter list would be published in July,” Ayengar said adding about 98 per cent photo i-cards of the voters had already been prepared and the rest would be completed soon.As per the draft rolls the total number of voters in the State is 20.24 lakh.
The number of voters had decreased by 3.75 per cent due to deletion of the names of 82,000 fake voters which came to the notice of the Election department during the special summary revision conducted a few months ago.
