Mizo NGOs not to cooperate with govt. on Bru identification Mizoram’s four major voluntary organizations have decided that they would cease to cooperate with the State Government in identification of Brus as the latter has commenced disbursing rehabilitation money to 804 surrendered Bru Liberation Front of Mizoram (BLFM) cadres without identifying bonafide Brus. Leaders of the Young Mizo Association (YMA) and other three NGOs, after holding a joint meeting here yesterday expressed displeasure over the distribution of Rs 20,000 each to the former BLFM militants without first ascertaining if they were bonafide residents of the State. The leaders said that they would discontinue to cooperate with the State Government in identifying the Brus. Senior government officials, however, clarified that the identification process and distribution of rehabilitation money were not connected as the Centre allocated the rehabilitation package to all the surrendered Bru militants irrespective of which State they belonged. Earlier, a joint team of NGOs and State Government officials had undertaken preliminary identification amidst boycott by the former BLFM militants who insisted that they should first receive Rs 40,000 each as promised by the Centre. The team found around 30 people as suspected to be from outside the State, but could not have proofs as these people were ‘hiding’ during the identification process.
