Fencing on Indo-Bangla border to be replaced

The Government of India has decided to replace the entire 854 km of fence constructed under Phase I in Assam, Meghalaya and West Bengal, as most of the fence has been damaged due to adverse climatic conditions, repeated submergence etc. The replacement work has already started in the states of Assam and West Bengal.

The Central Government will construct the fence in two phases a total length of 3,286.87 km in the Indo-Bangladesh border out of a total length of 4096.7 kms in order to prevent illegal infiltration and other anti-national activities.

Out of this, about 2,455.80 kms have been completed till December 31, 2006, in the states of Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, Mizoram and West Bengal. A pilot project for flood lighting along 277 km of the Indo-Bangladesh border has also been completed. To expedite the work, the NBCC, NPCC, EPIL have been engaged in addition to the CPWD, BRO, PWD, etc.

Meanwhile, the Left Front Government in Tripura is making all out efforts to develop human resources to tap full potential of the Look East Policy announced by the Union Government.

Praising the new North East Industrial and Investment Promotion Policy (NEIIPP), government sources said capital investment subsidy has been increased from 20 per cent to 30 per cent in the policy to attract investors.

The sources said the NEIIPP will be applicable only for Northeastern States including Sikkim to boost investment.

“Three mainland States including Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh had attracted more investment than NE States during the last year’s NEIIPP that has hampered the interest of the seven NE States and Sikkim”, he said.

“But this time, no mainland State will get benefit from the NEIIPP’, he said adding that for this the Northeastern States had to fight for a long time.

Referring to the Look East Policy, Tripura Minister Chakraborty said the State Government has started focusing on development of human resource to tap the opportunity in the wake of changing scenario in Northeastern region as well as South East Asia
