Building of
roads in NE to be expedited: minister
The building of roads in the North East under the Special Accelerated
Road Development Programme (SARDP) will be expedited to facilitate the
region’s economic development, Union Minister of State for Defence MM
Pallam Raju said.
Raju, who arrived here yesterday evening on a week-long tour to review
progress in road development works in the infrastructure-starved region,
said : “The Prime Minister is very particular that for the development
of the North East the BRO and especially the SARDP projects should
happen fast.We’ve
requested the MPs to join us so that it will be a much more coordinated
effort,” said Raju, who is also chairman of the Border Roads
Development Board.
The Minister, who was welcomed at the military airport here by Lt Gen R
K Chhabra, GOC of the Army’s 4 Corps, will meet Ministers and senior
officials of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) and North Eastern
Council during his trip.
Raju, who will tour
Assam
, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh to survey
development works by the BRO, said he would try to sort out all
outstanding issues related to such projects with the State Governments.
The SARDP, a special package of the Shipping, Road Transport and
Highways Ministry for the development of roads in Northeastern States,
includes an east-west corridor that will link the region with the rest
of the country.
Raju, who is accompanied by the BRO director general, Lt Gen K S Rao and
three MPs from the North East, will tour Along situated near the
Indo-China border, Imphal and Itaganar
