lawyers to launch stir for separate HC
A joint forum of lawyers will launch a movement demanding a separate High
Court in Tripura.
“We shall observe a ‘Demand Day’ to mobilize people’s opinion for a
separate High Court,” said Advocate General Nishit Adhikari said.
The joint forum will earlier hold a seminar where Chief Minister Manik
Sarkar, Leader of the Opposition Ratan Lal Nath and resource persons will be
invited to discuss on the issue.
“Irrespective of political ideologies, lawyers of the State have strongly
demanded for setting up a separate High Court”, he said.
He said a delegation of the forum will also meet top constitutional heads
including the President, Prime Minister, UPA Chairperson and Leader of the
Opposition in Lok Sabha to make them aware of the need for a separate High
Court.
“There is no dearth of infrastructure to have a High Court here as
construction of building for the High Court is already underway. Apart from
this, about 5,660 cases are pending with Agartala Bench of Gauhati High
Court”, he said.
Referring to the rejection of the demand for a separate High Court in
Tripura by the Ministry of Law on the ground of fewer cases, the Advocate
General said if Sikkim can have its own High Court where only 39 cases are
pending, why Tripura cannot have the same?
The State Assembly had earlier passed an unanimous resolution seeking a
separate High Court for speedy disposal of cases. The resolution had also
been forwarded to the Ministry.
