BJP slams Gogoi Govt on law-and-order front

BJP felt that the Unified Command structure has been rendered ineffective under the present dispensation. Launching a scathing attack on the Congress Government, BJP spokesman and general secretary, Ravi Shankar Prasad alleged that Tarun Gogoi’s Government has been all-round failure in protecting the life and property of the people of the State.

The BJP was reacting to the recent incidents of abductions and killings in the State including that of PC Ram and KN Jha.

Prasad at first demanded that the Government of India should set up a Unified Command in Assam with the Army, Central Para-military Forces and the State Police to tackle the situation in the State.

However, when reminded that a Unified Command already existed in the State with the Chief Minister as the chairman, Prasad said the structure has been rendered ineffective. “When was the last time the Army launched a successful anti-insurgency operation in the State,” he asked.

“We want the Government to make the Unified Command more effective in combating militancy,” he said.

The BJP also wondered what the Centre was doing regarding extradition of ULFA’s commander-in-chief, Paresh Baruah. There is different Government in Bangladesh. Then why Baruah has not been extradited, he asked.

“The assurances given by Bangladesh to India is not reflected on ground,” he opined.

Cautioning that ISI has become active in the State, Prasad said HUJI alongwith the Pakistani intelligence agency has been causing trouble in the State.

The BJP leader drew similarities with a bomb blast at Tinsukia on June 30, where a pressure cooker was used with the Malegaon blast in Maharastra. The same technique was used, he concluded.

The BJP also sharply reacted to the Chief Minister’s purported statement in Guwahati that when investments come then there would be some kidnappings. This statement of his is most unfortunate, he commented.
