Tripura receives proposal for chemical hub

Though the ONGC is not in a position to supply additional natural gas for setting up a power project or industrial unit in Tripura, a Kolkata-based company has showed keenness to establish a petrochemical complex in the State.

The estimated cost of setting up such a complex would be about Rs 600 crore, according to Allied Ragince & Chemical Ltd, the company which had placed a proposal to the State Government.

A three member team led by the company’s Chairman cum Managing Director (CMD) SR Mungra on Wednesday called on Chief Minister Manik Sarkar at the Civil Secretariat and submitted the project proposal. Representatives of GAIL and ONGC were present when Mungra placed the proposal to the Chief Minister.

Sources said that the company’s CMD told the Chief Minister that the company needs 0.2 million cubic metre natural gas to run such a unit.

However, it was not known what the Chief Minister told the company’s representatives after receiving the project proposal.

The State Government was informed that no further gas allocation would be given for setting up power project or industrial unit as the proposed Palatana gas project needs a huge quantity of natural gas.

In order to ensure supply of gas for the proposed mega power project, the ONGC has initiated a massive exploration drive across the State.

The GAIL has also taken steps to start drilling in October as announced by its Chairman cum Managing Director U B Choubey during his recent visit to the State.

The GAIL is set to start drilling in most promising Teliamura block as allotted by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas. It would press into action three rigs for this purpose.

He also stressed on optimum utilization of natural gas and requested the State Government to set up the chemical hub at Teliamura in West Tripura district.
