Day celebrated in North-East
The 60th Independence Day was celebrated
peacefully in Manipur with the main function being held at Manipur Rifles
parade ground amid tight security in view of a boycott call by insurgents.
Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh who was the chief guest at the function took
the salute from Manipur police personnel, Central Security Forces, Home
Guards and others after unfurling the national flag.
No civil organisations took part in the march past, official sources said.
Heavy police and central security forces were deployed at various
strategic points in Manipur capital complex here in the wake of boycott of
I-Day celebrations by major insurgent organisations which also called a
'General Strike' in Manipur today.
Most of the major roads wore a deserted look because people prefered to
remain indoors in view of insurgents sponsored general strike which would
end at 4 pm, reports said. Transport services between Manipur and
neighbouring states and within the state were also suspended.
Source said police were patrolling at various places in Imphal and areas
to detect movement of insurgents who might be attempting to disrupt the
I-Day celebration.
So far no untoward incident was reported from any part of the state.
