After unfurling the national Tricolour at the Assam Rifles ground here, the chief minister said, ‘’On this momentous occasion, we salute our founding fathers like Mahatma Gandhi, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Patel, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and many more who had tirelessly fought for freedom. We also pay homage to thousands of others who had sacrificed their lives for the cause of freedom.’’ However, the Opposition, comprising Congress MLAs and Zoram Nationalists’ Party MLAs, did not attend the celebrations because they believed that Mr Zoramthamga was ‘’unfit’’ to unfurl the Tricolour. ‘’Our Independence was not a mere emancipation from the British rule but a true vindication of truth and non-violence over injustice, tyranny and oppression,’’ Mr Zoramthanga said. He said making India a fully developed country by 2020 or even earlier was not a dream but a mission we all must accomplish. Zoramthanga also highlighted the unprecedented achievements Mizoram had witnessed during the two successive MNF ministries led by him. He claimed that his government had strengthened and modernised the state police force while also according priority to the attainment of self-sufficiency in foodgrains and vegetables. The state government had left no stone unturned to bring about industrialisation in Mizoram, putting an emphasis on the unique Bamboo Policy, the first of its kind in the country, which was being implemented in right earnest, he added. Independence Day celebrations in other districts of Mizoram also went off peacefully so far, official sources said. Mizoram | North East Enquirer (Headlines) | Nena Home Page | |
