30 injured in Chakma ambush

At least 30 people were injured today in an ambush laid by Chakma refugees at Diyun as they were returning after attending a claims and objection hearing pertaining to entry of refugees in the Electoral rolls. At least ten people are reported to be seriously injured. Allegedly several Chakmas waiting on the road between Diyun and Namsai attacked the two buses in which the local residents were traveling.

Confirming the incident, official sources from Namsai said that the Hearing had gone off peacefully. They said that as the people were returning to Namsai the Chakmas waylaid them and attacked the buses they were traveling in. The sources added that the incident has been intimated to the state government and the Changlang district administration is awaiting response as well as directives.

Taking strong exception to the incident, the All Arunachal Pradesh Students Union (AAPSU) has declared a 12-hours state wide bandh in its first phase of protest on August 15, the Independence Day. It has demanded immediate deportation of the refugees or else threatened to go on an indefinite protest all over the state until the refugees are deported. It also demanded that the claims and objections hearing be postponed till the court verdict as it has filled a PIL against enrollment of the refuges in the electoral roll.

An infuriated AAPSU president Takam Tatung, while speaking to this daily, questioned why the Election Commission was initiating electoral process when the matter is subjudice in the High Court. He also questioned the silence of the state government on the refugee issue even after the Union had given them a memorandum after the M’Pen attacks. The Union in its memorandum to the state government had called for verification of the refugee card holders. Tatung said that if the government had verified the refugee status, the problem would not have cropped up.
