Good days in store for Arunachal: Ramesh

Good days are ahead of Arunachal Pradesh with its huge hydro-potential, horticulture, tourism and border trade potential, Union minister of state for Trade and Commerce Jairam Ramesh said.

After inaugurating the Border Trade Centre (BTC) at Nampong, Mr. Ramesh said Rs 2.5 crore was sanctioned for development of the BTC and the area.

An Rs 175 crore proposal for comprehensive development of Pagsau Pass, BTC and Nampong town was submitted to him, which he said would be considered.

Addressing a gathering at Nampong, Ramesh said the opening of border trade with neighbouring countries would upgrade the stagnant economy of the district in particular and Arunachal Pradesh in general. He said Moreh in Manipur was the only BTC along the 1600 km Indo-Myanmar border.

“Talks are on with the Myanmar government, including its proposal to build road from Pagsauto Tannai, 60 km within Myanmar, to make the Nampong BTC functional”, he said.

Arunachal has enormous tourism potential: Ramesh

Minister of State for Commerce Jairam Ramesh has asserted that proper planning and infrastructure development of the state can increase the inflow of tourists to Arunachal Pradesh from the present 50,000 to five lakh annually.

The minister stated this to a delegation of the Arunachal Chamber of Commerce and Industries (ACCI), which called on him at Raj Bhawan to submit a memorandum pleading for the Tourism Ministry’s help in highlighting the Parsuram Kund, a famous Hindu pilgrimage spot in Lohit district, and the world famous Tawang Monastery.

The minister, who had inaugurated the Seventh Buddha Mahotsava at Tawang, said that he was thrilled to see a number of tourists, including a group of 80 girls from Mumbai and other tourists from Jammu and Kashmir, at the festival.

With four airports likely to be completed at Itanagar, Tawang, Pasighat and Ziro within a few years, the communication bottlenecks would be overcome, giving a new momentum to the tourism industry, he said.

The ACCI delegates conveyed their appreciation to Railway Minister Lalu Prasad for approving various projects, particularly for the survey of laying broad gauge railway lines from Rupai in Assam to Parsuram Kund, which would help religious tourism flourish in the state.

Mr. Ramesh advised that aspiring for only foreign tourists would be wrong and suggested that efforts should be made to woo domestic tourists as well. “The Pangsau Pass Winter Festival is an appreciable endeavour in achieving the goal and the Indian film industry should also be encouraged to come for shootings in this picturesque state,” he added.
