Protest rally in Thoubal district Protests against underground activities are nothing new in the North-Eastern region. Fed up with mindless violence and senseless killings, people of the region, time and again had come out on the streets to protest against the inhuman acts induldged by the insurgents. In one more addition to the list of protest against undergrounds, thousands of Manipur Government employees took out a silent rally at Thoubal against the unbearable demands from various underground organisations and kidnapping of employees of the district for the purpose of ransom. Organised by the banner of Thoubal district government employees co-ordination committee, the protest rally started from YASTA ground and concluded at BASU ground, Khangabok. In a following meeting, the government employees aired their grievances against the underground organisations. Around 3000 employees from 58 offices of different departments of the state government posted at Thoubal district took part in the protest. Later the leaders of government employees organizations stated that the main problem now faced by the employees was the pressure that came from different factions of the underground groups. Besides, some organisations on which a ban has been imposed by other organisations like UNLF and KYKL are still undergoing serving demand letters and collecting money from the government offices in Thoubal district. With the organisations that imposed ban asking the employees to inform them when any activists of the ban organisations came to them the employees were at a loss to decide what to do, they said. Alleging that the underground organisations were also collecting huge amount of money from any scheme and projects undertaken by the different offices in the district, the schemes and projects for the development of Thoubal district could not be properly completed, they lamented. The protest meeting resolved not to pay the huge amount
of money demanded by various underground organisations and to appeal to the
underground organisations not to kidnap any officers or staff for the
purpose of ransom. It also resolved not to go anywhere when called by the
organisations in connection with demands of money and to stand united while
protesting on any occasion of kidnap of staff of any department of Thoubal
district. |
