NSA reviews security scenario

In view of the recent militant activities in the North-East National Security Advisor (NSA) M K Narayanan reviewed the security scenario of the region in Shillong on February 18.

Officials’ in-charge of security along with Chief Secretaries and Director Generals of Police of both Assam and Meghalaya were present in the meeting.

Mr. Narayanan's visit comes amid growing concerns about the consolidation of jihadi bases in the region. There are intelligence inputs that suggest the presence of sleeper cells of jihadi elements, including the IS. The Centre has recently expressed concern about the inroads of the radical elements into the region. There are also reports that the ISI had engaged elements from Bangladesh to push fake currency into India to destabilise its economy and security.

Security arrangement for the ensuing assembly elections in the three North-Eastern states and the recent gunfights between BSF and BDR along the Indo-Bangla border and its aftermath also came up during the close-door meetings.
