Centre assures financial support for education in NE The Union
Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD) has launched a number of
schemes for educational development in the Northeastern region, to be
implemented through State Governments, and ensured adequate financial
support for the education sector. Department of
Higher Education had earmarked about 10 per cent of its Gross Budgetary
Support (GBS) for implementing the schemes in the North-Eastern States. Meanwhile,
the Planning Commission also approved the plan outlay of Rs 6,483 crore
for 2007-08 for development of higher education in the region, out of
which, an outlay of Rs 640.30 crore had been earmarked for the North-east,
and sanctioned an amount of Rs 177.22 crore. The shortfall
in utilization of this 10 per cent provision (by any Ministry/Department
except some exempted ones) was automatically transferred to the
Non-Lapsable Central Pool of Resources (NLCPR) administered by the DoNER
Ministry for funding specific development programmes in the North-east,
the officials underlined. During
2007-08, proposals worth Rs 51.87 crore had been released for various
infrastructure development projects in North-east, as part of offering
benefit of special category States, while national planning and resource
allocations gave special emphasis on the economic and social development
of the region. |
