Congress to fight alone in Manipur elections

Congress, the major ruling partner of the coalition Secular Progressive Front (SPF) Ministry, will go it alone in the forthcoming Manipur Assembly elections, AICC general secretary in-charge of the North East Oscar Fernandes said.
Fernandes, now on a visit to the State, said although CPI is an ally in the Ministry, “We were fighting the elections on our own and they on their own.” The Congress’ alliance with the CPI was forged after the last Assembly election and not a pre-poll one.

Expressing confidence that Congress would get an absolute majority, Fernandes said that if his party was voted to power, it will extend credit loan to farmers, implement programmes for education of every child and take up schemes to improve health condition of the rural people.

He said the party will also intiate steps for solving the insurgency problem in the region. Fernandes said the Election Commission had assured the political parties that all those who want to contest will be provided adequate security. The voters will also be provided security by the authorities concerned.

Stating that Congress was doing its best to get an absolute majority, the Union Minister said candidates at far-flung places who could face problems at the time of filing nomination papers were allowed to submit papers at Imphal.
