The Rs 113 crore Games Village for the forth coming 33rd National Games was inaugurated by the State Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi at Borsajai. The multi building township, built by the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA), is meant for accommodating of all the participants, athletes and the officials of the National Games, scheduled to be held from February 9.

Inaugurating the infrastructure, the Chief Minister reiterated that the State will successfully organise the mega event overcoming all the hurdles, especially the threat from insurgents. He said that the State Government had to face a stiff challenge from various corners in carrying out this uphill task. He asserted the government did not have adequate fund for completing the infrastructure. But finally they managed to spend over Rs 350 crore for completing all the stadia and the other infrastructure for the prestigious event. He sought full cooperation from the people of the State so that the event can be hosted in a grand manner. He assured that it will be the best National Games ever in India. He thanked the GMDA for completing the project within two years.

Gogoi also released the tickets for the opening and closing ceremony of the Games. Releasing the tickets he said that the organisers are introducing the ticket system only to control the crowd. There will be no entry fee for other events. The rates are Rs 50 for common people and Rs 10 for students.

The project has been built on a 13 acre land and a total of 25 residential towers have been constructed. The township consists of 700 flats, which include 448 three and 252 two-bed units. The project was supervised by the State PWD and the construction work was taken up by the L&T. The project was started in March 2005.

Speaking on the occasion Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the Games Village is designed to accommodate 8000 participants. The project, which is set up under GMDA’s self financing scheme, is also designed to accommodate various spaces and facilities that are mandatory for organising a national or international event.
