AGP against secessionism

The general body meeting of the opposition Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) made it clear that it was not for secessionism, nor it was for violence. The general body had met at the District Library auditorium here to discuss the issues connected with the present situation in the State, delimitation of the constituencies and party conference.

It has also made an appeal to the people to come forward for preserving the tradition of harmony and brotherhood among the peoples and the AGP members to engage themselves in the efforts to restore peace in the State. The AGP members should also engage themselves in extending all sorts of possible help to the victims of the recent violent incidents and to ensure security of all sections of the State’s population, said the resolution of the meeting on the present situation.

Briefing newspersons after the meeting, AGP president Brindaban Goswami said that the meeting had in its resolution on the present situation, also condemned the recent incidents of violence triggered by the ULFA. The militant outfit’s violence against the Hindi-speaking people of the State is contrary to the national heritage of the Assamese people. This will harm the very base of the national life of the Assamese people, it observed in its resolution, said Goswami.

The violence resorted to by the ULFA is not facilitating the State’s development, rather it is terrorizing the people only, observed the meeting. However, it maintained that the Government should ensure that none is made to suffer while providing security to a section of the people. There is the need also to solve the problems faced by all ethnic groups and to meet their aspirations, the meeting observed.

But, considering the failure of the State Government to contain the recurring incidents of violence, the meeting endorsed the demand raised by the party’s central executive, for Presidential intervention to dismiss the Government.

It also demanded immediate steps from both the Government of India and the ULFA to settle the issues through amicable negotiation shunning violence and counter-violence.

Delimitation: The draft proposal of the Delimitation Commission to reshape the constituencies has gone against the interest of the indigenous people of the State. The party representatives Dr Arun Kumar Sarma and Hitendranath Goswami in the Commission, will place the party’s views on the draft proposal at its meeting on January 30.

If the Commission does not accept the party’s views on the issue, the party will go for demanding exclusion of the State from the present delimitation exercise like Jammu and Kashmir and continuation of the existing arrangement, said Goswami referring, the general body meeting of his party.
