Indo-Myanmar trade hit by blockade

The ongoing economic blockade on National Highways 39 and 53 in Manipur has hit the Indo-Myanmar border trade.
The blockade was called by the All Tribal Students’ Union, Manipur since January 5 last to protest against Manipur Government’s alleged failure to reserve 50 per cent seats for tribals in the recruitment of graduate teachers as per the understanding reached between the government and student body last year.

Due to the blockade, Moreh town has been cut off from the rest of the country. Goods-laden trucks have been stranded at the Manipur-Nagaland and Asom-Nagaland border since the past few days.

In a single day, the volume of trade between the two countries is said to be about Rs. 5 lakh to Rs. 10 lakh in Indian currency, not to speak of the illegal goods worth Rs. 3 crore to Rs. 4 crore per day which crosses the international border though official records tell a different story of Rs. 11 crore trade a year.
