Manipur sportspersons on the warpath The jewels of Manipur, the sportspersons, are on the warpath. The reason is that those who continuously bring laurels to the State are being ignored by the State Government.. The government’s promises on providing jobs are never fulfilled. When these sportspersons returned home with medals, the government welcomed them with a series of promises which included job. But till date, their promises remain unfulfilled. Finally, these aggrieved sportspersons have decided to boycott any sports extravaganza held at the Khuman Lampak Sports complex from March 1 in case the Government failed to translate its assurances into action. The sportspersons have set February 28 as the deadline to the State Government for making its stand clear on promises for providing jobs to gold medal winners in the National Games. Winners of gold medals in the 33rd edition of the National Games held at Guwahati recalled that right from the National Games hosted by Manipur in 1999, the Government of Manipur had been making promises of providing jobs to the players who won gold medals in the subsequent National Games held at Hyderabad, Punjab and Guwahati. Acting on the announcement of the government, the bio-datas of the players who made top podium finishes in the last edition of the National Games at Guwahati have been submitted through the Manipur Olympic Association, they informed. Coming out strongly against the undue delay in processing the files of the players who won gold medals in the 33rd National Games, they said “as we do not believe in violence nor have we connections and money to bribe for government jobs we have been left in the lurch”. Demanding the government to make its stand clear on whether the players would be provided jobs or not within February 28, the aggrieved players announced their decision of boycotting all the sporting activities. |
