Manikya is no more
Prince
Kiritbikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur, son of the last king of Tripura,
Birbikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur, died at a hospital in Kolkata recently
after a massive cardiac arrest.
He was 74 and is survived by four daughters, one son and wife, Bibhu Kumari
Devi, a former minister of Tripura.
He was suffering from heart ailments for a long time and was admitted to the
Rabindranath Tagore Cardiac Hospital in Kolkata where he breathed his last
at 11-30 PM. He was also elected as Member of Parliament from Tripura for
two terms on a Congress ticket. Tripura, a princely state, joined India on
October 15, 1949 and attained the status of a Union territory

Thirty per cent of
prostitutes in red light areas of Mumbai are from the country's Northeastern
region, an NGO working in this field has claimed. The National Human Rights
Commission conducted a study on trafficking in India in 2003 and its report
was published recently, said K Choudhury, executive board member of the NGO
Impulse. Several world bodies including ADB and UNICEF have conducted
surveys in this field and their reports corroborate this claim, he said.
Speaking at the inauguration of a two-day workshop to train policemen in
Arunachal Pradesh against human trafficking, Choudhury called for a
coordinated approach by NGOs, police and other stakeholders to eradicate
this menace.
