30% prostitutes in Mumbai are from North East: NGO

Thirty per cent of prostitutes in red light areas of Mumbai are from the country's Northeastern region, an NGO working in this field has claimed. The National Human Rights Commission conducted a study on trafficking in India in 2003 and its report was published recently, said K Choudhury, executive board member of the NGO Impulse. Several world bodies including ADB and UNICEF have conducted surveys in this field and their reports corroborate this claim, he said.
Speaking at the inauguration of a two-day workshop to train policemen in Arunachal Pradesh against human trafficking, Choudhury called for a coordinated approach by NGOs, police and other stakeholders to eradicate this menace.
