Look East
It was a historic moment for the North-East
when a 35-member Thai business delegation led by the Commerce Minister of
the country arrived in North-East to explore the possibilities of exports
from the region. “The NE states and Thailand have enjoyed close historical
ties, and the time now has come to build further on that. We can be partners
in development, as there is great scope for promotiing mutual trade and
commerce between the two regions,” Thailand Commerce Minister Jirapaet
said. “Thailand has emerged as a prosporous nation in the past 25 years
through private sector collaboration with other countries. The North-East
can well emulate the example of Thailand,” he said. Mooting the idea of
observing 2008 as the North-East-Thailand year, Union Minister Mani Shankar
Aiyar said increased interaction between the region and Southeast Asian
nations would end the sense of alienation and neglect prevalent in the
North-Eastern states in consonance with the Centre’s ‘Look East’
policy. The visit is all set to add a new chapter in the relations between
the two countries and to mark a new beginning.
