Meghalaya keeps HIV/AIDS in check

Meghalaya’s data on people infected with HIV/AIDs may earn it the tag as a low prevalence state. However, a surveillance study conducted by the National AIDS Control Organization (NACO) found out that it is five more than the actual figures. Ever since the first HIV/AIDS case was detected in the state in 1999, the numbers of people infected have not substantially risen. According to the records available with the Meghalaya Aids Control Society (MACS), there are 234 HIV/AIDS patients in the state.
Interestingly, NACO study carried out every year estimated 0.06 % prevalence of HIV/AIDS cases in the state, informed the North East project coordinator of UNODC Dr P Singh today. “The NACO portrayal thus accounted to 1225 odd HIV/AIDS patients in the state”, stated Dr Pushkar Singh. Dr Singh felt that the NACO study and the state government figures do not tally because of the noticeable degrees of denial by those people infected by the disease. The reasons that he alluded to is social stigma and discrimination.
With a baseline study of the UNPODC showing that 95% of the people in the state does not have a complete understanding on HIV/AIDS, Dr Singh did not hesitate in citing this as the main reason for infected people to continue in a state of denial. “People in the state still perceive HIV /AIDS as a disease that can be infected because of immorality –that is on sexual lines but failed to realize that it is occurring amongst the general population because of drugs injector, blood transfusion and from a mother to a child”, stated Dr Singh.
He also said that the national institute of council research revealed a rising trend of drug users in the state. According to him from the 2004 finding that estimated around 1400-1500 drug users, the present data accounted to around 2500 of them.
