Manipur Governor invities investors to explore herbal plants of NE Manipur Governor Dr Shivinder Singh Sidhu invited the investors and experts to visit North-East to explore the potentials of the medicinal and aromatic plants in the region. Stressing that there is urgent need to push industrialization based on medicinal plants in the region to create economically viable livelihood, the Governor also recommended that Centre should establish AYUSH industry cluster and medicinal plants processing zone in North-Eastern states. “They shouldn’t feel shy to come to North-East”, said Dr Sidhu. “Security and problems are everywhere, only when development comes it would overcome insurgency”. Four of the North-Eastern States doesn’t have insurgency problems, he argued. Speaking during the inaugural function of the two-day National Seminar on medicinal plants and also drawing attention of the gathering the Governor Sidhu said delegates from North-Eastern states should take full advantage of presence of representatives of Central Government institutions in the workshop. “Let this be the beginning of a new initiative and I hope they would come out with a specific programme after the deliberations, he felt. Traditional medicines, particularly herbal medicines, have been increasingly used world wide during the last two decades. Manipur and other North-Eastern states have huge potential in the field of medicinal plants. Thus time has come to draw up comprehensive action plans to tap the potential for the development of the people of the region. Interestingly, National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development(NABARD) has been exploring such potential by giving financial assistance to the needy farmers in Manipur’s Senapati district for the cultivation of medicinal and aromatic plants. Forest and Environment Minister of Manipur, Thoudam Devendra presided over the inaugural function of the workshop while senior officials of the National Medicinal Plants Board, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and State Forest department also participated in the seminar. |
