Blame game

Once again outlawed United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) has accused the Centre of not being sincere enough to solve the problems of Assam. What provoked ULFA to make this allegation is not known immediately. But it is being assumed that as the Center has rejected the appeal of the underground organization for immediate release of its arrested leaders and also the demand of withdrawal of Army operations, are the main cause behind this outburst.

But before blaming the Centre for its lack of sincerity, the underground outfit should do well if it introspects a little bit more. Before the third round of talks with the People’s Consultative Group (PCG), ULFA triggered off 39 blasts in one week in different parts of the State. Moreover, it has sent an extortion note to Reserve Bank of India demanding huge amount of money.

As ULFA is continuing its subversive activities and extortions, it is not possible for any government to accept the two main demands of the organization. Till now ULFA has not sent any formal letter to the centre expressing its wish to hold talks. Besides, it had not shown any inclination in declaring ceasefire like the NSCN (IM) did. The outfit seemed to be more interested in issuing statements and in the process complicating the issue further.

Assam today stands at a critical juncture. Years of unrest has affected its economy badly. Development works has come to a standstill. Funds meant for development are being spent on maintaining law and order. Unemployment and poverty are on the rise. Unchecked infiltration has further worsened the matter. Only peace, lasting peace can rescue the State from such a position.

At this crucial juncture what needed are pragmatism, patience and will power. Assam can no longer live with violence. It’s time now to build a new Assam free from violence and full of development. Blame game will not help any one. It will only bring more misery to the State and its people.
