Das, who has been elected to the Rajya Sabha said that his victory is the
victory to the AGP, regionalism and struggling people of Assam. Addressing
a Press conference after his election to the Upper House, he said that he
would fight to raise Assam’s issues in the Parliament. “I thank the
party leaders and the MLAs of the party for their unstinted support to
me,” he said. Das also said
that a cultural revolution was needed to solve the problems and to restore
the mutual confidence among them. AGP president
Brindaban Goswami expressed the hope that Das would place Assam’s
problems in the Parliament in right perspective and demonstrate the
required boldness to uphold the cause of the State’s people. The
election of Das is surely going to strengthen regionalism in Assam. On the issue
of Matang Sinh’s withdrawal from the fray, he refused to make any
comment but said that the AGP believed in Opposition unity and made a
general appeal to all opposition parties to support its candidate. The AGP
will unite with all Opposition parties in the days to come to strengthen
the unity of the opposition and regionalism in the state. However, when
pressed for a categorical reply, he said, “ we did not request AUDF to
withdraw its candidate.” Though he
refused to comment also on the threat issued by Matang Sinh to take Das’
verifications on age etc to the Supreme Court, Goswami , Das and other
office bearers of the AGP were seemed to be unperturbed. Dipak Das,
who started his social activities as the sports secretary of the MC
College Students’ Union in 1976 was the AASU executive member during
Assam agitation. He was elected to the State Assembly from Barpeta in
1985. He became the Minister of State for Cultural Affairs around 1989. He
