Mizoram yet to impose ban on pigs from Myanmar

Contrary to some media reports, the Mizoram government has not imposed any ban on import of pigs from Myanmar. T V Fambawl, deputy commissioner of Champhai district, which is the Indo-Myanmar border trade centre said that pigs were still being brought from the neighbouring country.
However, the State Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Department has strongly recommended ban on import of pigs as a precautionary measure against swine flu.

“Though no case of swine flu has been detected here, we have suggested the state government to issue an order banning pigs coming from Burma to prevent the virus (H1N1),” Dr Saingura Sailo, joint director of AHVD said.He added that a high level-meeting of departments concerned would be held on Thursday to discuss the issue of banning import of pigs from Myanmar.
However, the sale of pork in Mizoram had already declined due to swine flu scare which also decreased the inflow of pigs from Myanmar. Mahmua, a pork seller in Aizawl, said this morning that his sale of pork had dipped to a record low during the past few days as people were afraid of consuming pork.
Pigs are imported on a large scale from Myanmar with pork being the favourite delicacy of Mizos and locally-bred pigs far from meeting the demand.
