Big facelift to Kohima After shifting the State Assembly complex to a new site recently, Nagaland Government has decided to develop the prime location in the state capital to a multi-purpose city centre envisioning a star category hotel. A decision was taken in this regard recently at a meeting of the State-level Programme Implementation Committee (SLPIC), headed by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, to give a facelift to the central location of the capital town, popularly called Old Secretariat complex. The complex now houses the Kohima campus of Nagaland University, a few government departments, Assembly Secretariat and MLA’s hostel, PCC Bhavan, Zonal Council Hall, among others. The Assembly Secretariat has already been shifted to a new location on the northern fringes of the town and the construction of new sites for Kohima campus of Nagaland University has commenced at a new place. Official sources here said the meeting presided over by the Chief Minister decided to convert the old MLA’s hostel in the said location into star hotel while the proposed city centre would have spacious car parking lots without felling the alpine trees, a major landmark of the town. The meeting also decided that an allernative site for the present Congress Bhavan would be searched by the district administration in consultation with the opposition Congress, the sources said. The Union Urban Development Ministry will expedite preparation of Detailed Project Report for the City Centre in consultation with experts and the State Tourism department will float tender for running the proposed star hotel. The sources said the meeting also decided to hand over the now- defunct Mini Toolroom Centre belonging to Industries department at Dimapur to Nagaland University for a period of three years to start a faculty of the proposed engineering college in the State. The department will soon sign an MoU with the university. On acquisition of land for construction of an airport at Chiethu, north of Kohima, the meeting resolved that the SLPIC would negotiate rate of compensation to the villagers and work out rehabilitation package whenever necessary, the sources said. As finding suitable land in hilly terrains of the main capital town is a difficult task, all major constructions in recent past are coming up on northern fringes of Kohima. Although land acquisition in Nagaland is a “complex issue” due to unique land holding pattern in the State, the land possession for new constructions by the government now becomes easier because all these land belonging to villagers and communities, falls under the Assembly constituency which the Chief Minister represents, said a Minister of the Rio-led DAN Ministry. |
