GC Langthasa’s son Purnendu shot dead Former Chief Executive Member of the NC Hills Autonomous Council, Purnendu Langthasa and former executive member of the Council Nindu Langthasa were shot dead by suspected DHD(J) militants at Langlai Hasnu village. Both Purnendu and Nindu were on their way to the village to attend an election meeting of Congress candidate Lakhshya Mani Langthasa, who has been fielded for the Dihangi constituency for the ensuing polls to the Council slated for June 12. Purnendu (45) is the eldest son of former minister GC Langthasa and he was contesting from the Mahur constituency of the Council for the second time on a Congress ticket. Nindu (47), who was contesting for the third time from Haflong constituency, was elected to the council as an Independent candidate on the two previous occasions. This time, he was contesting on a Congress ticket. Speculations are rife that the number of casualties in the militant attack may go up as Purnendu and Nindu were in a convoy of eight vehicles and both were traveling in separate cars. The details of the incident would be known only after the return of the senior civil and police officials, who rushed to the spot immediately after the incident. The Congress has been alleging that the DHD(J) has been warning its candidates and the militant group has demanded an amount of Rs 1 crore from the party for the safety of its candidates for the Council elections. The party has fielded candidates for all the 28 constituencies of the Council. Governor Lt Gen (retd) Ajai Singh and Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi have condemned the killings. |
