Move to record tribal wisdom of Arunachal

The Indira Gandhi National Centre of Arts has proposed to start short-term programmes of 15 to 20 days in Arunachal Pradesh to digitally record traditional tribal wisdom from elders in their own languages.

A calender of activity has been chalked out with the help of the Department of Research of the State Government and Department of Tribal Studies of the Rajiv Gandhi Centre, Member Secretary and Trustee of IGNCA, KK Chakraborty said.

He said that government projects and schemes often failed because the culture of the area where they were being implemented was ignored. Policy-makers unfortunately considered culture as nothing beyond song and dance presented on ceremonial occasions, he said.

The anthro-political, sociological and other aspects of lives of people were seldom taken into consideration while implementing projects and many felt that culture was only a matter of study for tourism and information departments, Chakra-borty, who is also Secretary of the Government of India said. He was speaking on indigenous knowledge system and heritage of Arunachal Pradesh.

He stressed the need for all departments to have a special wing to study culture of a particular area for taking advantage of it for successful implementation of projects.
