Mizoram to be tough on Bangla infiltrators
Mizoram Government has decided to take more stringent steps to contain   illegal immigration from neighbouring Bangladesh.Chief Secretary Haukhum  Hauzel informed that a new state monitoring committee had been setup to check infiltration in accordance with the Union Home Ministry’s instructions, which will do everything to check illegal migrants crossing along the Indo-Bangladesh border areas. The state monitoring committee will set up a special task force of policemen in all the districts bordering Bangladesh and they will work along with the BSF personnel deployed at strategic points, Mr Hauzel said adding that the committee officials would send reports then and there which would be redirected to the Centre. According to intelligence sources, the state has a population of more than 30,000 Muslims, who have come over from Hailakandi and Cachar districts of Assam.  

Protest in Manipur against fuel hike  
CPI M) workers and All  Manipur Motor Transport Association (AMMTA) launched a sit-in protest at several places in the State against the hike in the price of petrol and diesel, official sources said. CPI (M) workers organised the protest at Keisampat Junction area while AMMTA members launched the sit in protest at nearby Manipur central library area. The AMMTA had stopped plying all passenger buses within the state demanding hike in passenger fare in view of the hike.

Malaria claims 25 in Mizoram
Malaria has claimed 25 lives in Mizoram till May this year. Health officials said while malaria related deaths between January and April was 14, May alone saw 11 malaria related deaths. Doctors and health officials were worried at the rise in malaria deaths and has embarked on massive awareness campaign. The public has been informed to take medicines available free of cost from the Drug Distribution Centres (DDCs) located in the villages. About 800 DCCs were set up by the health department to give medicines, DDT sprays and mosquito nets free of cost.

Farmer offers Bible-inspired panacea
Even before official recognition, Mizoram’s indigenous medicinal plants have already worked miracles if the claims by the farmer here are to be believed. No wonder that over 10,000 people have used these plants so far and over 2,500 claim to have been “cured”. Lalchhuanmawia, a 52-year old farmer, from Durtlang area in the outskirts of the city, used to suffer from high blood pressure, ulcer and diabetes. “I started to lose hope when my doctors declared that there is nothing they can do to improve my situation,” the farmer said. “One day while going through the Holy Bible, I came across a reference in the book of Exodus of a herbal medicine, which God gave to the Israelites. Reading that, my search began,” Mawia recalled. In September 2003, Lalchhuanmawia found two types of herbs, mixed them and took it. “In two weeks I was able to smoke for the first time in six months, I started eating anything I desired, all ill effects were gone by then,” he said.

Aircel crosses one lakh customer base in NE

Strike in Tripura
The ruling CPI(M)’s Motor Shramik Union has called a dawn-to-dusk strike in Tripura to protest the recent price hike in petroleum products. The Tripura Motor Shramik Union and Tripura Autorickshaw Workers Union leaders said  that a 12-hour strike by the private transporters will be observed in the state to protest the UPA government’s recent price hike in petrol and diesel. They said following the rise in prices of petrol and diesel, the common people would suffer the most.
