Craft & weave exposition Craft and Weave - North East in Mumbai showcases a huge range of exclusive quality product line across the region. North East News Agency After the Agriculture meet in Dimapur, Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) adds another feather to its cap by succesfully organising Craft and Weave - North East in Mumbai recently. CII Deputy Director R. Vaithiyanathan said that the four- day Show was organized with the objective of promoting the traditional handicraft and handloom industry in North-Eastern India. Mrs. Pheroza J Godrej, renowned Art Historian and Environmentalist inaugurated the Exposition which showcased a range of exclusive quality product line across the entire North-East. Citing the fact that the hand crafted and hand woven items from North East have not impacted the country’s craft scenario, CII has launched this unique initiative. According to Dipankar Chatterji, Chairman, CII North East Committee, the event provided sellers a platform to understand the current trends, the market demand in terms of colour, texture and design. It also provided a unique opportunity to buyers to understand and had a first hand feel of these products. To help the artisans producing handloom and handicraft products in the region, CII, in partnership with NEDFI, launched the project called “Art-N-East”. CII’s effort is to extend help to the artisans through innovative designs. The official website of this project was launched by the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India at New Delhi in the last week of April. In 2004, CII organized a similar Buyer Seller Meet of Handloom and Handicraft products from the Region, in Bangalore. Also, artisans from the North-East were taken by CII to Bangkok and Myanmar during the CII’s “Made in India” Show, as a part of the North East pavilion Shows last year. Mr. Vaithiyanathan added that there were 28 entrepreneurs / artisans from the North-East in the Show. Entrepreneurs were happy in getting lot of orders and the retails sales was also good during the four day event . The initiative was supported by the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region, Office of the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), NABARD and NEDFI. Since there was a huge interest for the North-East handloom and handicraft products in the Western part of the country, CII has already started working on replicating the show in a bigger way again in Mumbai in the beginning of the next year, where CII would showcase North Eastern handloom and handicrafts.
