Special Cell for NE women

Special Legal Assistance for Protection of Women and Girls of North-east Living in Delhi has been launched in collaboration with National Legal Service Authority (NALSA) and Delhi High Court. The special legal assistance cell has been formed following frequent incidents of attacks, on students particularly girls of the North-east in the national capital. The Cell was launched at the valedictory function of the weeklong National Conclave of North Eastern States for Access to Justice to Women of the Region, organised by NALSA.

The function attended by students, representatives of local student’s organisation of North Eastern States and Delhi Police personnel and top officials witnessed a lively interaction. Several judges of Delhi High Court, legal luminaries and prominent citizens attended the function held at Vigyan Bhavan.

Women activist Kamala Basu, participating in the discussion urged the Delhi Police to handle the students of North-East with care and respect. The North-East refuses to live without dignity and self respect,” she said.

Pointing out that the girls of the Region were brought up in a different environment, she said they were far more independent, because they are not used to suppression by their family, like girls in Delhi are.

The students hailing from the Region in particular bear the brunt of the attack at the national capital. Reports of harassment by landlords, Police and local people, molestations and rape to physical violence pour in at frequent intervals. They are often taunted and humiliated because of their tribal features.
