Mizoram
crime detection rate is 96.55 per cent
Mizoram police have claimed a high crime detection rate of 96.55 per cent,
which is far ahead the other States.
Mizoram DGP Lalrokhuma Pachuau said that the tireless efforts of the teams
had led to crime rates drastically reducing during the past two years.
“Although Mizoram saw an increase in murder and rape cases, the police’s
achievement in crime detection is laudable. Crime detection rate in 2006 was
recorded at 93 per cent, which further increased to 96.55 per cent last
year,’’ the DGP said, adding that compared to other State police
departments, the Mizoram police’s crime detection rate is far higher than
other States.
Since he joined office, the DGP had been spending most of his time
travelling the length and breadth of Mizoram.
Saying that, in his next tour, he will cover the northeastern parts of
Mizoram and further to Indo-Myanmar border, Pachuau added,
“So far as I have seen, the law-and-order situation is good. Mizoram, as a
whole, is peaceful and there is no presence of underground outfits.’’
‘’While visiting district police departments, I witnessed that our
police are truly committed to their duties, but they are facing common
problems of building infrastructure,’’ Pachuau said. He also laid
emphasis on the need for public awareness on the importance of preservation
of crime scene. On many occasions in the past, crime scenes had been
destroyed by the curiosity of the public, and this is common cases in the
whole country, he added. “Destruction of crime scenes has caused us big
hurdles in many of our investigations. The general public should be educated
on the importance of preservation of crime scene,’’ the DGP stressed.
The DGP also pointed out that the absence of public relations officer in the
Mizoram police department causes them problems in establishing better
relationship between the police and the media.
