North East News Agency IIT Guwahati was established in 1994 about 30 years after the fifth IIT was established. It is located in a campus of 700 acres on the north bank of river Brahmaputra in Guwahati. With hills and lakes inside the campus and with the mighty Brahmaputra next door, the campus is one of the most beautiful educational campuses in the country. It provides ideal setting — far from the hustle and bustle of urban life — for learning and research. It is a fully residential institute for the students, like all other IITs of the country. The Institute is around 20 kms from the heart of Guwahati. The institute has most of the basic infrastructure in place with some facilities to be readied by the end of the 10th Plan period. The 74,000 sq meter academic complex houses the academic departments, their laboratories, classrooms etc. An administrative building has the offices of the institute. A modern computer centre and library building is ready for occupation. Four lecture halls and 1200 seater auditorium are under construction. A sports complex with an indoor sports stadium, a swimming pool and playing fields for all major games are nearing completion. A 72-room guest house, faculty and staff quarters and student hostels with single rooms for all, make the residential component of the infrastructure. A married students’ hostel is under construction. A hospital and a shopping complex are almost ready. Other facilities include a campus computer network with access points in every hostel room, an internal EPBX, high capacity internet connections (including access from residences) two banks with ATM facilities, a post office, a primary school, a kendriya vidyalaya and a bus service to the city. The institute has two academic departments; three inter disciplinary academic centres and four service centres. The departments are of Bio Technology, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Design, Electronic and Communication Engineering, Humanities and Social Sciences, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering and Physics. The three inter disciplinary academic centres are the Centre for Energy, Centre for Environment and Centre for Technology. The four service centres are Computer and Communication Centre, Central Instruments Facility, Centre for Educational Technology and Centre for Mass Media Communication. IIT Guwahati presently offers B.Tech, B. Des, MSc, M.Tech degree programmes and PhD. Total student strength in January 2005 was 1329. This is to increase to 2800 by July 2007. While about 40 per cent were post graduate students in 2004, this will increase to 50 per cent by 2007. 165 PhD students were there in January 2005. The institute has plans for faculty at roughly 1:10 faculty to student ratio. Alcheringa is the annual
cultural festival and Technicle is the annual technical festival of IIT
Guwahati. Both are organised by the students and they help in networking
among institutions, they help students learn about organisation and
management and they allow the talents of students to be showcased. Manthan
is an internal cultural programee while spirit is an internal sports meet.
The annual inter-IIT sports meet provides motivation for sporting students.
Besides coaching, major emphasis of the institute is on research and
development. |
