Cong
demands resignation of LF Govt in Tripura
The Tripura Pradesh Congress has demanded resignation of the Left
Front government, alleging ‘failure’ in maintaining transparency and
containing insurgency in the State. The government has failed in all aspects
and ‘the brazen corruption of the leaders of the ruling parties has come to
open’, TPCC president Samir Ranjan Burman alleged while addressing a party
rally. He alleged that the leaders were indulging in nepotism, selling jobs,
siphoning off Central Government’s fund meant for development. The
government has also failed to contain insurgency, he alleged.
Two Asom
towns come under rehab package
Centre has introduced a scheme to
rehabilitate families affected by border fencing, official sources said. At
present two border towns in Asom, including Karimganj and Dhubri have been
brought under the Integrated Housing Slum Development Project. In Karimganj,
425 such families will be rehabilitated to a proposed multi-storyed housing
complex, which will be raised on 20 bighas of land. A sum of Rs six crore
has been granted for the same and Karimganj municipal board has been
entrusted to implement the project. In the first phase, those who are below
poverty level will be accommodated in the housing complex. The Centre will
approve the second phase soon to rehabilitate more families beyond these
425. In Barak Valley only about half of the 124 km international border
with B’desh has been fenced and 5,000 Indian families have been affected.
Gauhati varsity to
implement audit scheme
The Gauhati University (GU) has decided to implement the academic
audit scheme in the university to bring about a change in the teaching
methodology as well as to make the university more result-oriented. The
decision was taken at the recent meeting of the university’s executive
council, the highest decision making body of the GU, said the sources while
adding that under the new scheme all the issues related to the academic
affairs of the university would be discussed. The new scheme would be
effective from the next academic year. The new scheme is adopted keeping in
mind the fact that academic sudit has helped the IITs and IIMs to go for
innovative and effective teaching methodology, said the sources while adding
that the scheme will be given the final shape very soon.
Mizoram
finds door for studies abroad
As a part of Mizoram’s mission to find
opportunities for higher studies in foreign countries, the State education
minister had been sent to Scotland.State Education Minister R Lalthangliana
said that students, who have finished their 10+2 level, will have to go
through a national level entrance examination to get admission in prominent
colleges in Scotland. The minister said that he had been to three prominent
Scottish universities and held discussions regarding educational support to
the State’s students. Apart from education loans for the eligible
candidates, the colleges have the provisions for giving work permits to
successful applicants.
MOU for
NE Airport development
Minister for Civil Aviation Praful Patel informed that the
development/construction/improvement of airports and Civil Enclaves in the
North-Eastern Region are being undertaken as per the MoU signed between the
A AI and NEC. According to the MoU, the NEC reimburses 60% of the cost of
the project and remaining 40% are funded by the Government of India,
Ministry of Civil Aviation in equal ratio of loan (20%) and grant (20%). The
details of major projects likely to be taken up during 11th Five Year Plan
are: Expansion and strengthening of apron at Agartala, construction of new
terminal building at Barapani, Shillong, extension of runway, construction
of terminal building and new apron at Dibrugarh, construction of
international terminal building additional parking stand, strengthening and
extension of runway and construction of new control tower cum technical
block at Guwahati, expansion of apron and additional link taxiway at Imphal,
construction of new airport at Itanagar, Pakyong and Kohima, construction of
new terminal building at Jorhat, operationalisation of airport for ATR-72
operation at Passighat and modification of terminal building at Silchar.
NSCNs
resume fight in Satakha
Cadres of the two NSCN factions are engaged
in heavy fighting in Satakha, under Zunheboto district. The warring cadres
engaged in a gunfight where around 90-100 cadres of the NSCN-K reportedly
launched attacks on the rivals’ camp near Hoishe village where an NSCN-IM
cadre was killed.
