Opposition forces Tripura Minister to resign

North East News Agency

Within months of a spectular electoral victory, ruling Left Front Government in Tripura received a jolt as Food and Civil Supplies Minister Sahid Choudury has to resign from the cabinet following mounting pressure from the Opposition parties for his alleged links with a HuJI activist from Bangladesh. The Left Front leader and his wife was accused of having close links with the arrested Bangladeshi national Mamum Mian.

Mamun was arrested by a CID team from West Bengal on March 27 on the basis of confessions by two other nationals of that country, who were arrested from West Bengal’s Howrah district with explosives.

The Opposition Congress even wrote to Governor D N Sahay to intervene into the matter and ask for the Minister’s resignation.

Congress spokesperson Tapas Dey said, “We are happy that the Minister has finally resigned. Law must be given free hand to take its own course and there should be no interference from the Government.’’ Choudhary told mediapersons that he did not resign under any pressure and that he was innocent. The State Police had filed a case against Mamum for staying in Tripura with a forged Indian citizenship and residential certificates.

However, the DG in a press meet here recently had categorically denied any links of the arrested Bangladeshi national with the Minister.

Earlier, the Congress in Tripura accused the ruling Left Front of backing anti-Indian forces —Pakistan-based ISI, al-Qaeda and Bangladesh-based HUJI.

Demanding a judicial inquiry into the terrorist-politician nexus, Opposition Congress leader Ratan Lal Nath expressed concern over the arrest of a HUJI activist here by West Bengal CID officials. He alleged that a member of the Assembly had helped the person hire a room in the city and recommended the Sub-Divisional Magistrate for issuing a Permanent Resident Certificate to him.

Referring to the arrest of a Bangladeshi youth, suspected to have links with HUJI, from the city by the CID, Mr Nath said.

Following the allegation Tripura Police have ordered an inquiry into alleged links between State Food and Civil Supplies Minister Sahid Chowdhury and a Bangladeshi arms dealer, officials said here on Friday. Acting on a tip-off, a joint team of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of West Bengal and Tripura arrested Bangladeshi national Mamun Mian alias Suman Majumdar from a house at Ramnagar, on the outskirts of Tripura’s capital Agartala last month, for his involvement in anti-Indian activities and trafficking in arms and explosives. “Police (special branch) officials have started an inquiry to uncover the details about Mamun Mia and also who helped him to stay in Tripura illegally,” said Director General of Police KTD Singh. After the inquiry report of the police (special branch) is received, action would be taken against all those involved in the crime, Singh said. Opposition parties have demanded removal of the Minister from the State Cabinet for his alleged links with the Bangladeshi arms trafficker.
