HSPDP candidate a likely spoilsport: MPA

The Meghalaya Progressive Alliance (MPA) sees the HSPDP candidate as a possible spoilsport to its candidate John F Kharshiing’s chances of winning the Shillong Parliamentary seat. The MPA had a review meeting on the just-concluded Parliamentary elections in Shillong. Even though the functionaries of the different constituents of the MPA exude confidence on their respective reports before the MPA central election committee that the MPA nominee will  come through, the leaders including the newly-elected United Democratic Party (UDP), Parliamentary Party leader JD Rymbai, BJP president HS Syiemlieh and a few leaders directly showed their apprehension.
“The late entry of Rev PBM Basaiawmoit as the HSPDP candidate has created a little bit anxiety in us, yet I strongly believe that our candidate will edge out the other contestants”, stated Rymbai. His statement came after the BJP State president said, “It is difficult to come out with a clear-cut assessment after the sudden entry of the HSPDP candidate in the fray”. While the grassroot workers’ overall report of the election process gave hope to the UDP member and MPA nominee of a chance, three constituencies –Mawryngkneng, Mawkynrew and Nongkrem’s diminished optimism to secure the maximum votes for their candidate was apparent. MPA election agent and UDP general secretary RA Lyngdoh said, “Basaiawmoit’s sudden entry might sway the margin that we had initially expected”.
The MPA review meeting also used the occasion to criticize the Congress party for alleged use of money power during the elections. Former Chief Minister and MPA chairman Dr Donkupar Roy said, “These are trying times for us, and our success will be a new beginning to combat the money power used by the Congress party”. State NCP president WR Kharlukhi stated, “The MPA’s concerted efforts during the Parliamentary polls should go on to take on the Congress in the elections in future”.
