PM was again in the Assam capital

The PM was again in the Assam capital in less than a month from his previous visit, this time to file his nomination papers for re-election to the Rajya Sabha. His current term in the Upper House ends on June 14th.

Singh filed his nomination on the 9th of June to the Assam Assembly Secretariat Secretary, Gauranga Pd. Das.The nomination paper of the PM contained the signatures of 8 Cong MLA's and 2 BPPF(H)  MLA's. AICC has appointed Home Minister, Shivraj Patil and senior Cong leader, Motilal Vora as observers for the poll. They, alongwith bthe party's in charge for Assam, Digvijay Singh were all at hand to supervise the nomination process of the PM.

The voting, if at all needed, is on the 24th of May but Singh's victory is almost certain. This will be his forth RS election from Assam.  He was first elected to the Upper House from Assam in 1991 and re-elected again in 1995 and 2001.

Earlier the same day the PM paid a 20-minute visit to his 'permanent residence' address in Guwahati. Singh took the flat on rent from Hemoprova Saikia (the widow of former CM,Hiteswar Saikia) in 1991 and still pays rent. The PM then addressed an important meeting of the Congress legislature party before filing his nomination.

The later part of the two day visit was utilised by the PM to review the law and order situation in the state. Both the PM and the Home Minister met the CM and the Governor to take stock of the situation. Shivraj Patil also met top officials of the police, paramilitary and other security agencies under the Unified Command. He was particularly apprised of the present status of the P.C.Ram( FCI ZM) abduction case.Mr Patil asked to bring more resolve and energy to catch the culprits and free Ram, it is so so understood.
