Railway Ministry denies deployment in NE

In a denial that may not convince many rail travellers in the North-east, Minister of State for Railways R Velu said the Railways had not deployed overaged coaches in the region. The Minister was responding to Anwar Hussain during the Question Hour, who wanted to know why the Railways were using overaged and outdated coaches in the North-east. In response, the Minister said that most of the tracks in the region were meter gauge and currently gauge conversion work was going on in the region. “There is no problem of putting overaged coaches in North-east,” he asserted.

Earlier, the Minister said that out of the total holding of approximately 47063 passenger coaches only 1034 coaches overaged, which constitute only 2.2 percent of the total coaches.Main-line overaged coaches are normally not utilised in passenger services and are used only for departmental purposes, Velu added.

Meanwhile, the Railway Ministry has clarified that the Rangiya-Murkokselek, Azra-Byrnihat and Dimapur-Kohima projects have been declared as national projects. However, the mode of funding is yet to be decided. The matter has been processed for further necessary action. No target for completion of these projects has been fixed, the Minister said in a reply to a question by Dr Arun Kumar Sarma.

There was confusion over the issue as the three projects found mention in the Rail Budget but they found no mention in the General Budget.
