Gogoi asks ultras to take part in elections

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi called upon the extremists to take part in elections and work for the development of Assam. Without naming any insurgent group, Gogoi blamed insurgency for pushing the State in to backwardness.

Addressing a large gathering of Congress workers, Gogoi said that insurgency would bring darkness for the unemployed youths of the State. Contrary to this, he said, education and industry should be given top priority so that the State could witness a boom in these two sectors in next five years. He also announced that current year (2007) would be observed as ‘Year of Education’ by his government.

Gogoi was of the view that his government’s planning towards implementation of various schemes such as surface communication, drinking water, education, etc would be milestones for the State’s development.

On the social development front, Gogoi said Sivasagar district would be declared as a district of tourist spots, and announced that all the encroached places would be vacated by promulgation of new laws, if necessary.

Earlier, Gogoi laid the foundation stone of OPD unit of first referral unit of Sonari SHC and Tai Ahom Cultural Centre. He also inaugurated the Sonari Public Auditorium built with financial assistance of Jayshree Tea Industries of Birla Group, ABITA and MP Area Development Fund of Santosh Mohan Dev.
