Tripura eyes improved bilateral trade with Bangla Tripura Government has envisaged a plan to develop infrastructure at the Land Customs Stations (LCSs) to tap full potential of the bilateral trade with Bangladesh.Infrastructure building of (LCSs) at Akhaura and Srimantapur in West Tripura has made good progress during the past one year but it would not bring expected result if the same thing is not done across the border. Sources said that the road connectivity just opposite of Akhaura and Srimantapur LCSs is very poor leading to an obstacle of increasing trade with the neighbouring country. With the changing scenario in the field of bilateral trade, the State Government has been pressing for joint declaration giving Sabroom as LCS in South Tripura. But the Bangladesh Government has not responded positively so far. “The most vulnerable issue is to construct a bridge on the river Feni. The demand has been placed before the Bangladesh Government but no positive gesture is forthcoming so far”, said an official of the Industries and Commerce department. He said the issue would be taken up in the next Foreign Secretary level meeting to be held next month and the government is now focusing on improvement of infrastructure not setting up border haats to boost petty business. He said the visit of Jairam Ramesh, Union Minister of State for Commerce was aimed to explore feasibility to boost trade ties with Bangladesh. There is no plan to set up new LCSs along the State’s border with Bangladesh as the government is focusing on improvement of infrastructure of existing trade mechanism. However, businessmen engaged in export-import want withdrawal of tariff barrier to increase the volume of trade. They also hailed the Central Government efforts to minimize tariff barriers to pave the way for better trade relations between the two sides. |
