Impressed by his initiative in making education, health and power sector programmes a community affair in Nagaland, the government has chosen Steel Secretary R S Pandey for the Award for Excellence in Public Administration.

The prestigious award was presented to Pandey by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at a function coinciding with the Civil Services Day.Singh had announced institution of the Prime Minister’s awards for Excellence in Public Administration on April 21 last year.

During his tenure as the Chief Secretary of Nagaland, Pandey conceptualised and implemented programmes to involve user communities in fields like education, health and power. The increased attendance and enrolment at schools, improved availability of doctors and increase in treatment of patients and improved collection of electricity revenues as well as reduced power theft was testament to the efficacy of the initiatives taken.
