Deputy CM defends decision to set up pvt varsities
Strongly defending the Government’s move to set up three private
universities in Meghalaya, the State Deputy Chief Minister Mukul Sangma said
the purpose of ‘education for all’ could not be achieved by the
administration alone.
“The government will encourage private investment in education field and
three legislation in the Assembly for setting up private universities was a
step forward in this regard,” Sangma, in-charge of Education, told a large
gathering of school students here winding up ‘education for all’ week
celebration.
At the same time, the government was committed in its endeavour to provide
education to all children, particularly the girls, to fulfil the
constitutional obligation, he said.
The government’s efforts to create more quality institutions would stop
‘very very alarmingly high’ students outflow from the state and the
north eastern region in general and also offer the pulpils to go for higher
studies.
Decribing students who come to study in Shillong from outside as
‘permanent tourists’, Sangma said they stay here almost 300 days in a
year creating business for others like taxi drivers, hoteliers and others.
He said the government’s efforts were on to regain the reputation of
Shillong as a ‘centre of education’ which it had before. Setting up of
institutions would also meet the demand of admission as many parents were
not getting a chance to send their wards to quality schools, Sangma said.
Earlier, Director of Elementary and Mass Education
A. M Sangma stressed the
need of education for girl children.
