NCP receives a shot in the arm
The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) received a shot in the arm ahead of the
2008 Assembly election, after the entire Sohiong block of the Congress party
resigned en- mass and joined the NCP.Most of the party workers of the
Congress complained of failed promises and lack of development for their
en-mass resignation.
The sitting MLA and former Minister of the Congress-led MDA coalition
government, HDR Lyngdoh is being held responsible for the constituency’s
poor development over the years. “We want to give the NCP an opportunity
this time after the Congress and the United Democratic Party both betrayed
us in keeping their promises made to the people of Sohiong during
elections,” former block president of the Congress, Jied S Kurbah said
after joining NCP.
He stated Lyngdoh had done little in reducing the plight of the people of
Sohiong in the last four years. As a consequence, he added, Sohiong remained
largely backward with scant infrastructure development and poor basic
amenities. The former general secretary of the block Congress, PF Nongrang
also hit out at the sitting Congress MLA for confining within himself and
not helping the people in times of need. “He even refuses to meet people
of the constituency these days,” Nongrang allegede.
Over 100 Congress party workers together with Kurbah and Nongrang joined the
NCP, in a simple ceremony here today. Admiral Sangma, the leader of the
opposition in the Assembly and NCP leader was present at the ceremony with
the State NCP president WR Kharlukhi and others.
