Top Manipur ultra, 4 others nabbed

A combined force of Manipur Police commandoes and Assam Police rounded up the general secretary of Manipur-based outfit United National Liberation Front from a hideout in Guwahati.Manipur DGP Yumnam Joykumar told the reporters that the effort to nab the top functionaries of the Manipur-based outfits operating in Guwahati and Kolkata are on following a tip-off since the past few weeks. “We have reports that funds were collected at these places as they (UGs) were operating there,” Joykumar said.The state police commandoes made the first attempt in Kolkata followed by two consecutive attempts in Guwahati, he added.

The Manipur Police commandoes in its second attempt with the help of the Assam Police late last night arrested UNLF leader N Marjit alias Thabal (49), a resident of Nagamapal Singjubung in greater Imphal from a hideout at Panjabari in Guwahati city.The combined security team also recovered Rs 47 lakh in cash,one laptop,one printer, one digital camera and several incriminating documents from the possession of the militant leader, sources said.Similarly in another crackdown ,Guwahati City Police have nabbed three top leaders of another Manipur-based outfit Revolutionary People’s Front and a sympathizer one Norendra from a hotel in Fancy bazaar.The arrested militant leaders include one Lieutenant A Amuba of Kumbi, Second Lieutenant I Ingotomba of Nambol and Sergeant Major Y Bung of Salam Konjil saiton,it added.Mention may be made here that in a major gunbattle at T Namphao village near Gamphazol in Manipur’s Chandel district bordering Myanmar, troops of 16 Battalion Assam Rifles gunned down five ultras belonging to UNLF in Manipur’s Chandel district bordering Myanmar yesterday morning. So far four bodies of the slain ultras were recovered while the fifth fell into a deep gorge and could not be recovered.

In a major success, City Police and Imphal Police arrested the general secretary of the United National Liberation Front (UNLF), Narengbam Marjit alias Thabal alias Iboyaima (49), from Panjabari area of Guwahati.Cash worth Rs 47 lakh, a laptop, a digital camera and some incriminating documents were recovered from him.

City Police also arrested RPF/PLA cadres Yumlembam Malam alias Ibotomba alias Keirangba (38), self-styled second lieutenant division-3; Yumlembam Bung alias Ratan alias Malem alias Malengbam (28), self-styled sergeant of staff; Nongmaithem Amuba alias Nelson (34), self-styled second lieutenant of division-1; and Nongmaithem Norendra (29), a linkman, from Hotel Navalka at Fancy Bazar last night.
