Centre extends ban on six Manipur outfits  

MThe Centre has extended the ban on six Manipuri underground organisations including People’s Liberation Army and PREPAK for two more years. Declaring that these predominantly Meitei (tribe) outlawed organisations were continuing to indulge in anti-national activities, Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee said “government has decided to extend the ban on these organisations for further two years.” The decision to ban these organisations was taken at a meeting of the Cabinet Committee presided by the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.The meeting was also attended by Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil, External Affairs Minister Natwar Singh and Finance Minister P Chidambaram. Mr. Mukherjee said that the outlawed organisations whose ban has been extended include Revolutionary People’s Front of Manipur, United National Liberation Front (UNLF), PREPAK (People’s Revolution Party of Kanglipak), KYKL (Kangli Yawoi Kanna Lup) and KLF (Kuki Liberation Front).He also announced that the government has decided to raise 25 new battalions of India Reserve Police which would be deployed in Naxalite affected states, Jammu and Kashmir and in the North East.  

Rich tributes paid to former CM    

Manipur paid rich tributes and offered condolences over the death of its first Chief Minister Maharajkumar Priyobrata Singh. Maharajkumar Priyobrata, popularly known as PB, breathed his last yesterday at his residence here. He was 94 and a bachelor.  

National tribal policy in the offing: Kyndiah 

The Centre is in the process of bringing out a national tribal policy with special provisions for minuscule tribal groups across the country. Addressing a high-level meeting, Union minister for Tribal Affairs and Development of North Eastern Region (DONER) P R Kyndiah said preserving the socio-cultural identity of small tribal groups with a population ranging from 50,000 to 100,000 was one of the prime concerns of the Centre and a national tribal policy with special reference to such groups was being prepared. Mr Kyndiah was speaking in the context of allocation of primitive tribe status to Lepcha community of Sikkim - a demand which the State Government has been raising before the Centre for sometime now. The meeting was attended by Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling, his cabinet colleagues and others. The Union minister also said his ministry was considering measures necessary for giving the Limboos and Tamangs of Sikkim their political rights.

Mary Kom lashes out at detractors 

Strongly protesting the emergence of two presidents of Komrem union, the apex body of the Kom community, Mary Kom has taken strong exception against the derogatory comments floated by either president in reception function organised by Kom community in the presence of one of the two presidents. “My sentiment is very much hurt and the sense of pride in winning laurels for my own community is a lost cause when certain comments were made during a reception function,” said the pugilist.

IIM base to be  laid in December  

Much-awaited foundation stone laying ceremony of the IIM     will be held some time in December. In this connection Meghalaya Chief Minister D.    D. Lapang met the Union  Human Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh and discussed the probable dates  for the foundation stone     laying ceremony. Mr. Singh informed the Chief Minister that the foundation stone could be laid sometime in December second week.

Chandra Bose museum in Nagaland 

The Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Memorial Development Society, Nagaland is intending to build a befitting Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Memorial and Museum at Chesezu village under Phek district. It may be recalled that Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s last camp was discovered at Chesezu village under Phek district. Sources said that the idea was to attract visitors and highlight many unknown facts about Netaji’s heroic efforts during the freedom struggle. This venture is the outcome of a book written by Vekho Swuro “Discovery of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Delhi Chalo last camp in Nagaland”. It is also learnt that the project has been submitted to the Union Minister of State for Tourism Renuka Chowdhury. The response is still awaited.

Students union bans Daily   

All Naga Students Association of Manipur has banned the Imphal Free Press Daily in the Naga areas from November 12 for the “chauvinistic attitude”  of the Daily.
