The Public Investment Board (PIB) has finally given the nod for the construction of Tipaimukh Dam project in the Barak river and sanctioned Rs. 6000 crore for it.

The project was initially investigated by CWC and thereafter by the Brahmaputra Board. It has been handed over to NEEPCO in July 1999 for execution. The revised DPR prepared by NEEPCO at a cost of Rs. 5163.86 crore was techno economically cleared by CEA on July 2, 2003.

In a recent high level meeting of the PIB held in New Delhi recently it was decided that construction work on the project will start early next year. The meeting was attended by Minister of State for Heavy Industries Santosh Mohan Dev and Minister for Water Resources Priya Ranjan Das Munshi.

According to Mr. Das Munshi, the project will greatly solve the power problem in Assam, particularly in the Barak Valley. He also believes that this project will also solve the flood problem in the Barak valley.

“The project was pending for the last 30 years due to various unavoidable circumstances. But due to personal intervention of the Prime Minister, the construction work will start very soon,” informed Santosh Mohan Dev.1500 mw power will be generated from this dam once constructed.

The representatives of the BJP Tamenglong District Committee, Manipur submitted a five-point memorandum to the party‘s national vice-president Venkaiah Naidu and other visiting national leaders during the two days Chintan Beithak (brain storming session) held at the party‘s office from November 5.

In the memorandum, BJP Tamenglong District Committee demanded that the 1500 KW Tipaimukh dam to be taken up by the North East Electrical Power Corporation be installed.

Observing that the proposed project will provide a new lease of life to those living in the Churachandpur and Tamenglong districts of Manipur as well as Barak Valley of Assam, the committee said that the Tipaimukh dam is part and parcel of the integrated water management and harnessing of the whole of Northeast India‘s river systems under Brahmaputra Board.
