Indo-German project in Tripura

Left-ruled Tripura is all set to receive a financial grant of Rs 112 crore to alleviate poverty through natural resources management.

A four-member team of German Government led by Mission Director (Technical) Dr Hans Helmrich arrived to finalize the ambitious project Poverty Alleviation through Natural Resource Management (PATNRM). The team called on Industries Minister Tapan Chakraborty and Chief Secretary Sashi Prakash and discussed various issues related to the project.

Director, Industries, B. G. Janner said that financial cooperation has already been completed while technical cooperation is likely to be finalized during the on-going visit of the German team.

The team will stay to complete formalities to start the ambitious project, he said adding that they will also visit various places of North and Dhalai districts.

They will also hold detailed discussion with concerned departmental officials before signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the State Government.

He said that the members will again meet Chief Secretary for inking the MoU for the project on September 28. The estimated cost of the project is Rs 112 crore.

Mr. Janner said that the project will be implemented in North and Dhalai districts. He further said that the project is aimed to improve socio-economic condition of the people who depend on forest wealth. “In fact, value addition of forest wealth like bamboo and medicinal plants will be the main focus of the project”, he said.

The project will also assist to develop market linkage and entrepreneurship concept to harvest maximum benefit, Mr. Janner added.

Tripura Government has entered into an agreement with the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) for sustainable management of the forest wealth of the State through improvement of the density and quality of the forest cover of the State over a period of eight years commencing from 2007-08. The JBIC shall arrange the funds under its ODA loan assistance amounting to Rs 374 crore for identified project area of 7,023 sq km.

Observers feel that it is a gloden opportunity to tap the vast natural resources available in the tiny North-Eastern State, as the project promises to develop market linkage.
